Border officials intercepted a shipment of illegally logged timber moving between Assam and Meghalaya, underscoring ongoing enforcement against illegal logging in the region.

Border patrol teams operating at the Assam‑Meghalaya frontier intercepted a convoy of trucks carrying timber that had been felled without proper permits. The seizure took place near the town of Gohpur, a key transit point on the inter‑state border.

According to the Assam State Police, the convoy consisted of six vehicles, each loaded with approximately 200 cubic meters of timber. The cargo was found to be sourced from protected forest areas in Meghalaya, violating the Forest (Conservation) Act.

A spokesperson for the Forest Department stated that the seized timber will be confiscated and the owners charged under the Act. The authorities also announced a joint task force with Meghalaya’s forest officials to intensify monitoring of cross‑border timber movement.

The incident highlights the persistent challenge of illegal logging in the Northeast, where dense forest cover and porous borders make enforcement difficult. The government has pledged to strengthen surveillance and impose stricter penalties to curb the trade.
