IITM Pune has inaugurated a new X‑Band Doppler weather radar at Mahabaleshwar as part of the national Mission Mausam, enhancing regional weather monitoring capabilities.
IITM Pune has inaugurated a new X‑Band Doppler weather radar at Mahabaleshwar, a hill station in Maharashtra, as part of the national Mission Mausam initiative.
The radar, which operates in the X‑Band frequency, is designed to detect precipitation intensity and wind patterns, providing high‑resolution data for weather forecasting.
Installation of the radar will strengthen the Indian Meteorological Department’s ability to monitor severe weather events in the western peninsular region and improve lead times for warnings.
The project is a collaboration between IITM Pune and the Indian Meteorological Department, reflecting the government’s focus on upgrading meteorological infrastructure.
