The Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission and IIT Roorkee have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at modernising the state's handloom industry.
New Delhi, Oct 6 (Northeast Today) – The Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRL M) and the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) formalised a partnership on Tuesday by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The agreement focuses on transforming Tripura's traditional handloom sector through research, skill development and technology infusion.
Under the MoU, IIT Roorkee will provide technical expertise, design support and training modules to handloom weavers and related enterprises in the state. The mission will facilitate field implementation, mobilise beneficiaries and coordinate with local cooperatives.
Both parties said the collaboration aims to boost productivity, improve product design and open new market avenues for weavers, thereby enhancing rural livelihoods. The MoU marks a significant step toward integrating academic research with grassroots craft industries in India's Northeast.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from the mission, IIT Roorkee faculty, and representatives of the handloom community, underscoring the joint commitment to sustainable development of the sector.
