The institute’s senate has put on hold the proposed 2026 rules that would impose tough penalties for academic cheating, reverting to the 2015 policy for upcoming exams. The move follows the recent death of a student who was suspected of cheating during an examination.
IIT Bombay’s senate met and decided to suspend the newly drafted 2026 regulations that prescribed severe penalties for academic misconduct, opting instead to reinstate the 2015 framework for the forthcoming examination cycle.
The decision came after a tragic incident in which a student died under suspicion of having used unfair means during an exam, prompting the institute to review its disciplinary approach.
Under the interim arrangement, faculty members are allowed to record instances of suspected dishonesty on a designated form, while students are encouraged to submit their own accounts separately; both sets of information will be examined by a disciplinary committee once the exams conclude.
The senate emphasized that the temporary measure aims to ensure fairness and transparency while a comprehensive review of the penalty structure is undertaken.
