The chief of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) officially flagged off a turmeric consignment from Meghalaya bound for Singapore, marking a new export initiative for the state’s farmers.

Meghalaya's agricultural officials welcomed the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) chief as he flagged off a consignment of locally grown turmeric destined for Singapore. The shipment, prepared under a collaborative programme between IFAD and the state government, aims to open international markets for the region's spice producers.

The move is seen as a boost for smallholder farmers in the northeastern state, who have been encouraged to adopt quality standards that meet export requirements. By linking Meghalaya's turmeric to a high‑value market like Singapore, the initiative seeks to increase farm incomes and promote sustainable cultivation practices.

IFAD officials highlighted that the export trial could serve as a model for other horticultural products from the region. The consignment's departure marks the first step in a broader strategy to diversify Meghalaya's agricultural exports and strengthen its presence in global spice trade.

Local traders and farmer groups expressed optimism that the successful shipment will pave the way for larger volumes in future, reinforcing the state's reputation for premium aromatic spices.

The turmeric will be transported to Singapore's wholesale markets, where it will undergo further processing and distribution, potentially reaching consumers across Southeast Asia.
