ICRISAT has obtained access to CRISPR‑Cas9 gene‑editing technology, aiming to develop crops that can better withstand climate change impacts.

ICRISAT, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi‑Arid Tropics, announced that it has secured access to CRISPR‑Cas9 technology, a precise gene‑editing tool used worldwide for crop improvement.

The partnership will enable researchers to modify genes in key staple crops such as millet, sorghum and chickpea, aiming to increase tolerance to drought, heat and salinity—factors that are intensifying due to climate change.

Experts say the new capability will accelerate the development of climate‑resilient varieties, potentially boosting food security for millions of farmers in semi‑arid regions of India and other developing countries.
