ICMR Dispatches Experts to Gujarat Amid Chandipura Virus Resurgence

The Indian Council of Medical Research has sent a team of specialists to Gujarat to investigate a reported resurgence of the Chandipura virus, a rare but potentially fatal disease affecting children.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has dispatched a team of virology and epidemiology experts to Gujarat following reports of a new Chandipura virus outbreak in the state. Chandipura virus, a member of the Rhabdoviridae family, is known to cause encephalitis in children and can lead to high mortality rates if not promptly diagnosed and treated.
The ICMR team will conduct field investigations, collect samples from suspected cases, and collaborate with local health authorities to trace the source of the infection. They will also assess the effectiveness of existing vector control measures, as the virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites.
Health officials in Gujarat have urged parents to seek immediate medical attention for children exhibiting fever, seizures, vomiting or altered consciousness. Early detection and supportive care remain the best strategies to reduce fatality rates associated with Chandipura virus.
