ICAR-NRCB Marks 33rd Foundation Day, Unveils New Banana Varieties

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research's National Research Centre for Banana celebrated its 33rd foundation day by showcasing several newly developed banana cultivars.
The National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB), a unit of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, observed its 33rd foundation day with a special exhibition of newly bred banana varieties. The event was held on the institute's campus, where researchers displayed the latest cultivars to visitors and stakeholders.
The showcased varieties are the result of multi‑year breeding programmes aimed at enhancing yield, disease resistance and adaptability to diverse agro‑climatic zones. Scientists highlighted traits such as higher fruit size, improved shelf‑life and tolerance to Fusarium wilt, which threatens many traditional banana crops.
Senior officials of ICAR and NRCB underscored the importance of these innovations for Indian farmers, noting that the new cultivars could boost farmer incomes and contribute to food security. The centre plans to release the most promising lines to growers in the coming planting season after field trials and seed multiplication.
