A court in Baitul sentenced husband Promod Vishwakarma to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 4,000 for repeatedly harassing his wife and urging her to kill herself. The dowry‑related charge was dismissed due to lack of evidence.
The District Court of Baitul, located in the Bhayavadi village of Madhya Pradesh, delivered its verdict on a case involving domestic abuse and alleged encouragement of suicide. Promod Vishwakarma, the accused, was convicted of repeatedly harassing his wife, Kavit, and pressuring her to end her life. The court imposed a sentence of seven years’ rigorous imprisonment along with a monetary fine of Rs 4,000.
During the trial, the prosecution also alleged that Vishwakarma had demanded dowry from his wife’s family. However, the evidence presented failed to substantiate this claim, leading the bench to acquit him of the dowry‑related charge.
The judgment underscores the judiciary’s stance against marital cruelty and the manipulation of vulnerable spouses. Legal experts noted that the sentence reflects a growing trend of stricter punishments for domestic violence offenses in India.
Victims’ rights groups welcomed the decision, urging authorities to ensure swift implementation of the sentence and to provide protection for the surviving spouse. The case adds to a series of recent rulings aimed at curbing gender‑based violence in the region.
The court’s order also mandates that Vishwakarma pay the imposed fine within the stipulated period, failing which additional penalties may be enforced.
