The Assam Chief Minister clarified that his remarks about ULFA referred to the pro‑talks faction, following earlier praise of the group by a state minister.
The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said on Tuesday that his comments about the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were directed at the faction that is open to talks. The statement came after a senior Assam minister had publicly praised ULFA, sparking confusion among the public. Sarma clarified that he was not endorsing the entire organization but was referring to the pro‑talks wing that has been engaged in negotiations with the government. The Chief Minister reiterated that the state government remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the insurgency while maintaining a firm stance against violence. His remarks were aimed at dispelling rumors that the government was aligning itself with ULFA as a whole.
