Botanists from a Himachal research institute have documented a previously unknown sunflower species during a survey of the Arunachal Pradesh mountain region.

During a recent botanical survey of the eastern Himalayan foothills, a team of scientists from a Himachal institute recorded a sunflower that does not match any known species in the national flora database. The plants were found growing at elevations above 2,000 metres in the remote mountainous terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.

Preliminary morphological analysis shows the new sunflower has a distinct petal coloration and seed head structure, setting it apart from the common Helianthus species cultivated across India. The researchers have collected herbarium specimens and are preparing a formal taxonomic description for peer‑review publication.

The discovery adds to the growing inventory of endemic flora in the northeastern region, underscoring the ecological importance of the Arunachal mountains. Conservationists say the finding highlights the need for continued field studies and habitat protection to preserve such undiscovered biodiversity.
