The Himachal Pradesh government announced a plan to trim its Indian Administrative Service cadre from the current 153 officers to 130, with a long‑term goal of 110.

The state administration of Himachal Pradesh has approved a restructuring of its Indian Administrative Service (IAS) cadre. The current strength of 153 officers will be reduced to 130 in the immediate phase, and the government aims to bring the total down to 110 over the next few years.

The decision, disclosed through an official circular, is part of a broader effort to streamline the bureaucracy and align staffing levels with the state's fiscal and administrative priorities. Officials said the reduction will be achieved through attrition, retirements and non‑replacements rather than forced transfers.

State officials emphasized that the move will not affect the functioning of key departments, as the remaining officers will be redistributed to ensure continuity of services. The plan is expected to be implemented gradually, with periodic reviews to monitor its impact on governance.

The announcement has drawn attention from civil‑service associations, which have called for clarity on the timeline and the criteria for future appointments. The government has assured that the restructuring will be carried out transparently and in accordance with existing rules.
