The Himachal Pradesh government has announced that schools under the Mid‑Day Meal scheme will serve eggs and fruit twice a week, aiming to improve nutrition for students.

State education officials said that from the upcoming academic session, every government‑run school in Himachal Pradesh will include eggs and seasonal fruit in the mid‑day meal menu twice a week. The move is part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of nutrition provided to school‑age children under the national Mid‑Day Meal programme.

The additional items will be served on designated days, with the aim of supplying essential proteins and vitamins to students, particularly in rural and remote areas where dietary gaps are common. Schools will receive guidelines on portion sizes and procurement to ensure consistency and safety.

Officials noted that the initiative aligns with recent central government recommendations to diversify school meals and address malnutrition. The scheme is expected to be funded through a combination of state budget allocations and existing central assistance for the mid‑day meal scheme.

Parents and teachers welcomed the decision, citing potential health benefits and improved concentration among pupils. The education department will monitor implementation and report on outcomes in the next fiscal review.
