Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Gupta announced that 320 new postgraduate medical seats will be introduced in Himachal Pradesh to strengthen specialist healthcare.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Gupta disclosed that the Himachal Pradesh government will increase the number of postgraduate medical seats by 320. The decision aims to expand the pool of specialist doctors in the state’s hospitals and teaching institutions.
The additional seats are expected to be allocated across existing medical colleges, allowing more candidates to pursue advanced training in fields such as cardiology, oncology and orthopaedics. Officials say the move addresses a long‑standing shortage of specialists, especially in remote districts.
Implementation is slated to begin with the upcoming academic session, subject to approval from the Medical Council of India and the state health department. Authorities anticipate that the new seats will gradually improve patient outcomes and reduce the need for residents to travel out of state for specialist care.
State health officials have welcomed the announcement, noting that a larger cadre of specialists will also support research and community health programmes across Himachal Pradesh.
