A senior Congress figure from Himachal Pradesh has publicly called for the Chief Election Commissioner’s removal, citing concerns over a 2023 election law.
Himachal Pradesh Congress leader Ashok Sharma (name illustrative) addressed a press conference on Monday, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. Sharma argued that the 2023 amendment to the Representation of the People Act undermines electoral fairness and gives undue advantage to the ruling party.
The leader said the law, passed without adequate parliamentary debate, compromises the independence of the Election Commission. He urged the President and the Supreme Court to intervene and initiate a removal process under the constitutional provisions.
The Election Commission, through a spokesperson, declined to comment on the specific allegations but reiterated its commitment to conducting free and fair elections. The demand adds to growing political scrutiny of recent electoral reforms across several states.
No official response has been received from the CEC’s office as of now, and the issue is expected to feature in upcoming parliamentary discussions.
The Congress party has scheduled further rallies in Shimla and other districts to mobilise public opinion against the law, emphasizing the need for transparent electoral processes.
