The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a swell surge alert, warning of unusually high waves along the coasts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Lakshadweep islands.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised a swell surge alert for the western and southern seaboard, specifically the coasts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. The warning cites an expected rise in wave heights that could exceed normal seasonal levels, posing risks to maritime activities and coastal infrastructure.

Fishermen operating in the affected zones have been advised to remain in safe harbours and avoid venturing into open waters until conditions improve. Coastal authorities are instructed to monitor sea conditions closely and to issue timely updates to the public through local media and digital platforms.

The IMD cautions that the heightened wave activity may persist for several days, depending on the progression of the weather system responsible for the swell. Residents of low‑lying coastal areas are urged to stay alert, secure vulnerable structures, and follow any evacuation directives issued by local disaster management agencies.

Authorities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep are coordinating with the National Disaster Management Authority to ensure rapid response capabilities, including the deployment of rescue teams and the provision of emergency shelters where needed.
