On Sunday evening, sudden heavy rain in Sumela village, Shivpuri district, swept about 70 quintals of drying maize into a drain, leaving farmer Ranjit Yadav with half his crop lost.

Shivpuri district's Sumela village was hit by a sudden downpour on Sunday evening, turning a routine drying process into a loss for local farmer Ranjit Yadav. The farmer had laid out roughly 140 quintals of maize outside his house to dry after harvest. As the rain intensified, water surged into the nearby drain, carrying away about half of the stacked grain.

Eyewitnesses from the village reported that the flow of water rose quickly, catching the farmer off guard. While the 70 quintals of maize were lost, other villagers rushed to the site and managed to rescue the remaining crop, preventing further damage.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of smallholder farmers in Madhya Pradesh to unpredictable weather events, especially during the critical post‑harvest drying period. Local authorities have been urged to improve drainage infrastructure to mitigate similar losses in the future.
