Eastern India experienced widespread heavy rain after a second cyclone hit the region within a week, intensifying flooding concerns.

The eastern part of the country was drenched in heavy rain on Thursday as a second cyclone moved in within a span of seven days, compounding the weather disturbance that began earlier in the week. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alerts indicating that the system would bring intense downpours across several states, including West Bengal, Odisha and parts of Jharkhand.

Meteorologists noted that the rapid succession of two cyclonic events is uncommon for the region and can lead to saturated soils and rising river levels. The IMD warned residents to stay alert for possible flash floods and landslides, especially in low‑lying and hilly areas.

Local authorities have begun pre‑emptive measures, deploying rescue teams and setting up temporary shelters for people in flood‑prone zones. Roads in affected districts are reported to be water‑logged, and some train services have been delayed as a precaution.

The government has urged citizens to follow safety instructions, avoid unnecessary travel, and cooperate with relief agencies should the situation worsen.
