The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall across East and Northeast India on Thursday, even as the monsoon experiences a temporary pause. Residents are advised to prepare for possible flooding and travel disruptions.

The IMD issued a weather alert stating that a strong moisture-laden system is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rain over parts of East and Northeast India on Thursday. States such as West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are expected to witness the most intense showers.

Officials warned that the downpour could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, disrupt road and rail traffic, and increase the risk of landslides in hilly regions. They urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay updated through official channels.

The forecast comes amid a brief monsoon pause, during which rainfall activity had weakened over the core monsoon zone. Meteorologists said the pause is temporary and that the monsoon trough is expected to shift northward, reviving rains in the eastern and northeastern sectors.

Authorities have placed disaster response teams on alert and advised farmers to protect standing crops where possible. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as the weather evolves.
