The Haryana government has announced a new scheme to curb the use of older diesel and petrol vehicles. Under the plan, traffic cameras will be installed at key junctions to detect cars that exceed the age limits—diesel vehicles older than ten years and petrol vehicles older than fifteen years.
When a flagged vehicle is detected, authorities will issue a notice and the owner will be required to either upgrade the vehicle or face penalties. The move is part of Haryana’s broader effort to reduce pollution and improve road safety.
Transport officials say the system will be fully operational by the end of the year and will work in tandem with existing registration databases to verify vehicle age. The state aims to see a significant drop in the number of older cars on its roads within the next few months.
