The Haryana government has approved a 2,000‑tonne per day waste‑to‑energy facility aimed at generating power from municipal solid waste.

The state of Haryana has given the green light to a waste‑to‑energy project that will handle up to 2,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste each day, converting it into electricity for the grid. Officials said the plant is part of a broader effort to curb the growing volume of waste that currently ends up in open dumps across the region.

According to the announcement, the facility will be developed through a public‑private partnership, with the Haryana Waste Management Authority overseeing the tendering process. Detailed project reports are being prepared to outline the technology, financing and operational framework.

While the initiative is promoted as a step toward cleaner energy and reduced landfill pressure, a recent study highlighted the high carbon intensity associated with certain waste‑to‑energy processes. Environmental groups have urged the government to adopt the most efficient technologies to minimise greenhouse‑gas emissions.

The plant is expected to contribute renewable power to the state's electricity mix, supporting Haryana's targets for sustainable development and waste management. Further details on the project timeline and capacity will be released as the planning phase progresses.
