The Central Pollution Control Board says Gwalior's air‑quality index has surged to the worst level among five cities in Madhya Pradesh as Diwali approaches.
Gwalior has been flagged by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) as having the highest air‑quality index (AQI) among five monitored cities in Madhya Pradesh ahead of the Diwali festivities. The city’s AQI has climbed into the "severe" category, indicating a sharp rise in particulate matter and other pollutants.
The CPCB’s latest bulletin also lists Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur and Ujjain as experiencing elevated AQI levels, with Bhopal entering the red‑zone threshold. All five cities are reporting concentrations well above the national safe limits, a trend attributed to increased firecracker sales, vehicular traffic and winter temperature inversions.
Health officials have issued advisories urging residents, especially children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions, to limit outdoor activities and use masks. The state government is monitoring the situation closely and has urged local authorities to enforce stricter emission controls until the festival period concludes.
