India Today reports that Guwahati has opened the first visa application centre in the Northeast, aiming to cut travel time and expenses for regional applicants.
Guwahati, Assam, has become the site of the Northeast's inaugural visa application centre, according to India Today. The facility is expected to streamline the visa‑processing journey for residents of the eight‑state region, who previously had to travel to distant hubs such as Kolkata or Delhi.
Officials say the centre will handle a range of visa categories, providing on‑site document verification and biometric capture. By localising these services, applicants can avoid multiple trips, thereby reducing both travel costs and the time taken to secure a visa.
The opening aligns with broader government efforts to improve connectivity and administrative access in the Northeast, a region that has long faced logistical challenges in accessing central services.
