Priyam Parikh of Gujarat Tea Processors told BW Disrupt that sustainable profitability is set to replace traditional volume‑based growth metrics in the tea sector.
Priyam Parikh, a senior executive at Gujarat Tea Processors, addressed the BW Disrupt conference, emphasizing that the industry’s growth benchmark is shifting from sheer volume to sustainable profitability. He argued that investors, regulators and consumers are increasingly demanding environmental and social responsibility, making sustainability a core driver of financial performance.
Parikh highlighted several initiatives his company has undertaken, including the adoption of renewable energy for processing plants, waste‑to‑energy projects, and fair‑trade certification for tea growers. These steps, he said, not only reduce the carbon footprint but also improve margins by lowering operational costs and opening premium market segments.
The executive urged other tea manufacturers across India to embed sustainability into their business models, warning that firms that cling to traditional growth metrics risk losing market relevance. He concluded that sustainable profitability will soon become the primary indicator of success for the tea sector.
