The Gujarat government is promoting the use of turtle‑safe nets to meet U.S. import standards and boost shrimp exports.

Gujarat's aquaculture authorities have announced a push to adopt turtle‑safe fishing nets for shrimp harvesting, aiming to align with stringent U.S. import regulations. The move is intended to safeguard marine turtles while enhancing the state's competitiveness in the lucrative American market.

Officials say that the adoption of certified net designs will address concerns raised by U.S. environmental groups and reduce the risk of shrimp consignments being rejected at customs. By meeting these standards, Gujarat hopes to secure larger orders and increase its share of global shrimp exports.

The state is coordinating with shrimp farmers, net manufacturers and export agencies to facilitate the transition. Training programmes and subsidies are being considered to encourage rapid uptake of the turtle‑friendly gear across coastal farms.

If successful, the initiative could set a benchmark for other Indian coastal states, positioning India as a responsible supplier of seafood to environmentally conscious consumers abroad.
