The Gujarat government has issued a new rule requiring housing societies that are less than ten years old to bear the cost of constructing and maintaining roads, water supply, drainage systems and street lighting.

The state cabinet approved an amendment to the Gujarat Societies Act, stipulating that newly formed residential societies—those established within the last decade—must contribute financially to basic civic infrastructure.

Under the rule, societies will be liable for the cost of laying and maintaining internal roads, providing water connections, installing drainage networks and ensuring street lighting, expenses that were previously borne by municipal authorities.

Officials said the move aims to reduce the fiscal burden on local bodies and to ensure that residents of newer colonies receive timely services. Detailed guidelines on cost calculation and payment timelines will be issued in the coming weeks.

The amendment has drawn mixed reactions; some resident associations argue that the additional financial load could strain budgets, while others welcome the clarity on service‑provision responsibilities.
