Gujarat Lions Face Rising Conflict Amidst Heat and Encroachment

✍️ Hindustan Times 🗓 30 Jun 2026, 08:31 AM 👁 1

Human-lion conflict in Gujarat is intensifying due to extreme heat and habitat encroachment. Illegal activities are also contributing to the rising tensions.

The delicate balance between humans and lions in Gujarat is increasingly strained, with multiple factors contributing to a rise in conflict. Extreme heat conditions are forcing lions to venture closer to human settlements in search of water and cooler environments.

Compounding the issue is the growing encroachment into their natural habitats. As human populations expand and development continues, lion territories are shrinking, leading to more frequent encounters and potential confrontations.

Furthermore, the presence of illegal activities within or near lion habitats is exacerbating the problem. These activities can disturb the animals, disrupt their natural behavior patterns, and increase the likelihood of negative interactions with local communities.
