The Gujarat government has prolonged the prohibition on gutkha and other tobacco and nicotine products for an additional year, extending the ban until September 2027.

The state cabinet announced today that the existing ban on gutkha, the chewable form of tobacco, will be extended for another year. The decision keeps all tobacco and nicotine products prohibited in Gujarat until September 2027, reinforcing the state's long‑term public‑health strategy.

Officials said the extension follows a review of health data that links gutkha consumption to serious oral and systemic diseases. The ban, first imposed in 2022, applies to the manufacture, sale and distribution of gutkha and related nicotine products across the state.

The government has instructed local enforcement agencies to continue raids on illegal vendors and to intensify awareness campaigns in schools and markets. Industry representatives have been warned that violations will attract strict penalties.

By maintaining the prohibition for the next five years, Gujarat aligns its policy with the national goal of reducing tobacco‑related morbidity and mortality. The move is expected to curb the prevalence of gutkha use, especially among youth, and to lower the burden on the state's healthcare system.
