Gudi Padwa, the first day of the Marathi calendar, was observed today with colourful processions, traditional music and community feasts throughout Maharashtra.

Maharashtra marked the start of the Marathi New Year on Gudi Padwa, a festival that falls on the first day of the Chaitra month in the lunisolar calendar. The day is traditionally regarded as an auspicious moment to welcome spring and new beginnings, and it is celebrated with the hoisting of a decorated bamboo pole called a "gudi" outside homes and public spaces.
Communities across the state organised vibrant processions, folk performances and communal meals. In major cities such as Mumbai and Pune, streets were lined with stalls selling sweets, rangoli designs and traditional attire, while temples witnessed special prayers and cultural programmes.
State officials praised the public enthusiasm and ensured that civic amenities were heightened to manage crowds safely. Local police were deployed at major gathering points, and municipal bodies cleared traffic and provided sanitation facilities to support the festivities.
The celebrations also highlighted Maharashtra's cultural diversity, as people from different linguistic backgrounds joined in the rituals, reinforcing the festival's role in fostering social cohesion.
Overall, Gudi Padwa 2024 unfolded as a vivid display of regional heritage, with citizens embracing the occasion through music, dance, and shared meals, signalling a hopeful start to the new year.
