The GST Council approved decriminalisation measures that remove punitive provisions for delayed tax compliance, aiming to ease the burden on businesses.

New Delhi – In its latest meeting, the GST Council adopted a set of decriminalisation reforms that eliminate jail terms for businesses that miss filing deadlines or delay tax payments. The changes replace criminal prosecution with monetary penalties, signalling a shift toward a more business‑friendly compliance regime.

Council members said the move is intended to reduce litigation, lower compliance costs and encourage voluntary compliance across sectors. By removing the threat of imprisonment, the reforms aim to create a predictable environment for small and medium enterprises that often struggle with procedural delays.

Industry bodies have welcomed the decision, noting that it aligns India’s indirect tax framework with international best practices. The council will monitor the impact of the reforms and may fine‑tune the penalty structure based on feedback from taxpayers.

The decriminalisation package is expected to take effect from the next financial year, after formal notification by the Ministry of Finance.
