A recent survey shows groundwater tables have fallen in 554 mandals across Telangana, raising concerns for agriculture and drinking water supply.
The latest groundwater monitoring report released by the Telangana State Water Resources Department indicates a noticeable decline in water tables across 554 mandals of the state. The data, compiled from over 2,000 observation wells, shows that many areas are experiencing drops of 1 to 3 meters compared to the same period last year.
Officials attribute the downward trend to a combination of lower monsoon rainfall, increased extraction for irrigation, and rising domestic demand. The department warned that continued depletion could exacerbate water scarcity for farmers who rely heavily on borewells for crop irrigation.
The state government has announced plans to intensify rainwater harvesting initiatives and promote micro-irrigation techniques to curb further groundwater loss. Meanwhile, local authorities are urging communities to adopt water‑saving practices and monitor well usage more closely.
Stakeholders, including farmer associations and environmental NGOs, have called for stricter regulation of groundwater extraction and greater investment in sustainable water management projects to safeguard the region's long‑term water security.
