The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Phase III has been activated in Delhi-NCR as particulate matter levels rise sharply ahead of the Diwali festivities.

Delhi's pollution control authorities announced the activation of GRAP‑III on Monday, citing a rapid increase in PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations as the city approaches the Diwali period. The alert places the region in the highest emergency tier, triggering stricter emission controls, temporary suspension of construction activities, and heightened public health advisories.

Under GRAP‑III, the Delhi government has ordered a ban on the sale and use of firecrackers in most residential areas, limited the operation of diesel‑run generators, and instructed schools and hospitals to keep windows closed and use air‑purifiers where possible. Traffic police have also been directed to enforce stricter vehicular emission norms and to clear clogged roads that impede air flow.

Health officials warned vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions—to limit outdoor exposure and to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. The alert will remain in force until air‑quality readings fall below the prescribed safe thresholds.
