Government unveils 2026-30 roadmap to value India's natural wealth

The Union government released a five-year plan to quantify the economic value of the country's natural resources, aiming to integrate ecosystem services into national accounts.
New Delhi – The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change presented a detailed roadmap for the period 2026-30 that will systematically assess the monetary worth of India's forests, rivers, biodiversity and other natural assets. The framework proposes using internationally recognised valuation techniques, such as ecosystem service accounting, to generate data that can feed into the country's Gross Domestic Product calculations.
Officials said the initiative seeks to highlight the contribution of nature to economic growth and to guide policy decisions on conservation, land use and climate mitigation. A dedicated task force will collaborate with state governments, research institutions and international partners to collect baseline data and develop valuation models.
The government plans to publish interim reports annually, with the final comprehensive valuation expected by the end of the roadmap period. Stakeholders are expected to use the findings to prioritize investments in green infrastructure and to strengthen India's commitments under global environmental agreements.
