The central government announced a cap on profit margins for 137 cancer medicines, which could reduce retail prices by as much as 70%.
New Delhi – The Union government has introduced a ceiling on profit margins for 137 oncology drugs, a move aimed at making cancer treatment more affordable for patients across the country. The policy, disclosed through an official notification, mandates that manufacturers and distributors cannot exceed the prescribed margin limits at any stage of the supply chain.
Analysts say that the margin cap could translate into retail price reductions of up to 70 percent for many of the listed medicines, depending on the existing cost structure. By lowering the out‑of‑pocket expense, the government hopes to ease the financial burden on families battling cancer, especially in low‑income segments.
The regulation will take effect from the date specified in the notification, and compliance will be monitored by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in coordination with the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority. Stakeholders have been urged to adjust their pricing models accordingly to avoid penalties.
