The Union Ministry of Education has approved the establishment of five regional hubs to promote research and teaching of India's classical languages, ranging from Assamese to Pali.

New Delhi – The Ministry of Education announced on Wednesday that the central government has approved the creation of five dedicated research hubs for India's classical languages. The decision follows a long‑standing demand from scholars to provide institutional support for the study and preservation of languages that have been accorded classical status.
The approved hubs will focus on languages such as Assamese, Pali and other recognized classical tongues, offering specialised curricula, research grants and archival facilities. Each hub will be linked to a major university or cultural institute in its region, enabling collaborative projects and academic exchanges.
Officials said the centres will receive funding under the central government's cultural heritage scheme and are expected to become operational by the next fiscal year. The initiative aims to strengthen scholarly work, encourage new generations of students, and safeguard the literary heritage of India's classical languages.
The move has been welcomed by language experts, who view it as a significant step toward systematic documentation and revitalisation of these ancient linguistic traditions.
