The central government has approved a two‑year extension for Agnipath scheme recruits and unveiled a plan to increase their absorption into regular forces.

In a recent policy decision, the Union Cabinet approved a two‑year extension of service for personnel recruited under the Agnipath scheme. The move aims to give the short‑term recruits additional time to complete their training and operational exposure before transitioning to regular cadres.

Under the extension, Agnipath trainees will now serve for a total of three years instead of the originally planned one year, after which they become eligible for permanent positions based on performance and vacancy criteria.

The Ministry of Defence also outlined a new absorption framework that seeks to expand the number of slots available for Agnipath graduates in the Army, Navy and Air Force. The plan includes a phased increase in vacancies aligned with upcoming recruitment cycles, ensuring a smoother integration of trained youth into the armed forces.

Officials said the extended tenure and enhanced placement mechanism are expected to improve retention, provide greater career stability for young aspirants, and strengthen the overall manpower readiness of the defence services.
