All government staff in Odisha’s Ganjam district have been instructed to report for flood‑relief duties on Sunday, despite the usual weekly holiday.
The district administration in Ganjam, Odisha, issued an emergency directive on Saturday ordering every government employee to report for flood‑relief duty on Sunday, overriding the regular weekly holiday. The order comes as heavy rains have caused rivers to overflow, inundating several villages across the district.
Local officials say that more than a dozen villages are currently under water, with thousands of residents displaced and basic services disrupted. The sudden surge in water levels has strained existing rescue teams, prompting the need for additional manpower from all government departments.
The directive was signed by the District Collector, who emphasized that the safety of affected communities takes precedence over routine schedules. Staff from health, education, public works and police departments have been mobilised to assist in evacuation, distribution of relief kits and restoration of essential infrastructure.
Disaster Management officials are coordinating the effort with state‑level agencies, deploying boats, temporary shelters and medical aid. Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with the relief teams and avoid non‑essential travel in flood‑affected zones.
The government has assured that employees will receive appropriate compensation for the extra duty and that normal weekend schedules will resume once the water recedes and the situation stabilises.
