The central government has suggested postponing the planned shift of operations at Mumbai's airport and has asked airlines to submit revised relocation plans.

New Delhi has advised that the scheduled transfer of flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport be deferred pending further assessment. Officials said the move, originally slated for this year, requires a more detailed implementation strategy from the carriers involved.
The ministry has written to major airlines operating from the airport, requesting them to submit updated relocation proposals that address logistical, safety and passenger‑service concerns. The airlines are expected to respond within a stipulated timeframe.
Stakeholders, including airport authorities and airline unions, have welcomed the government's caution, noting that a rushed shift could disrupt traffic at one of India's busiest hubs. The final decision on the new timeline will be announced after the revised plans are reviewed.
The delay underscores ongoing challenges in managing capacity and infrastructure upgrades at Mumbai's primary gateway, which handles over 70 million passengers annually.
