Government Considers PM Surya Ghar 2.0 with Battery Storage and Shared Rooftop Solar

The government is exploring an upgraded version of the PM Surya Ghar scheme that would incorporate battery storage and shared rooftop solar installations to enhance solar adoption.

The Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar initiative, which aims to provide solar power to rural households, is set to receive a significant upgrade. The proposed PM Surya Ghar 2.0 would add battery storage facilities, allowing households to store excess solar energy for use during cloudy periods or at night. Additionally, the plan includes a shared rooftop solar model, enabling multiple households to benefit from a single rooftop installation. This approach is expected to reduce installation costs and increase overall solar coverage.

Experts say that battery storage can address the intermittency of solar power, improving reliability and reducing dependence on the grid. The shared rooftop concept could also accelerate deployment in densely populated areas where individual rooftops may be too small or unsuitable for solar panels.

The government has announced that it will consult with state authorities, renewable energy experts, and private sector partners to refine the scheme’s technical and financial parameters. A detailed proposal is expected to be drafted in the coming months, with a view to launching the updated program in the next financial year.
