Google announced it will forward child sexual abuse material directly to Indian law‑enforcement agencies, mirroring Meta's recent policy shift.
New Delhi – Google has confirmed that it will now channel any detected child sexual abuse material (CSAM) straight to Indian law‑enforcement agencies, bypassing third‑party intermediaries. The move aligns the tech giant with Meta, which recently adopted a similar reporting framework for its platforms in India.
The company said the decision is part of its ongoing commitment to protect children and comply with local regulations, including the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Google's policy will require its services, such as YouTube and Google Search, to flag and forward CSAM to the National Centre for Child Protection (NCCP) or designated police units. The firm added that it will cooperate with authorities to ensure swift action against perpetrators.
Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology welcomed the step, noting that direct reporting can accelerate investigations and reduce the circulation of illegal content online.
The initiative underscores a broader trend of global tech firms tightening safeguards against child exploitation in response to mounting pressure from governments and civil‑society groups.
