Christians nationwide held solemn prayers and services on Good Friday, marking the holy day with reverence.

Good Friday, the Christian commemoration of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, was observed on 29 March with a series of solemn prayers and liturgical services across the country. Churches, cathedrals and small chapels opened their doors before sunrise, inviting the faithful to reflect on the significance of the day.

In major urban centres such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, congregations gathered for the traditional Tenebrae service, followed by the reading of the Passion narrative. Rural parishes also held open‑air vigils, often accompanied by the ringing of church bells and the lighting of candles to symbolize the darkness of the crucifixion.

Authorities in several states reported that the gatherings proceeded peacefully, with local police providing routine security to ensure orderly conduct. No incidents or disruptions were recorded, and the observances concluded with the customary Easter Vigil later in the evening.

The nationwide observance underscored the deep-rooted presence of Christianity in India, as believers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds participated in the shared rituals of mourning and hope.
