The traditional Goan theatre form Tiatr is applying for UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status, and the state government has vowed to back the effort.
The cultural troupe known as Tiatr, a popular form of musical theatre in Goa, has formally expressed its intention to seek inclusion on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. Officials from the Tiatr community said the move aims to preserve and promote the art form on a global platform. The Goa state government responded by announcing that it will provide all necessary assistance, including financial aid and administrative support, to facilitate the nomination process. Cultural experts welcomed the initiative, noting that UNESCO recognition could boost tourism and encourage younger generations to engage with the traditional performance style. The application is expected to be submitted to the national cultural ministry before the end of the year.
