Goa has recorded a decline in road‑traffic deaths, prompting Transport Minister Michael Godinho to urge authorities to strengthen safety measures on the state's highways.
The Goa government reported a measurable reduction in road‑traffic fatalities over the past year, marking a significant improvement in the state's safety record. Data released by the state's transport department shows a drop of several percentage points compared to the previous year, reflecting the impact of recent enforcement actions and awareness campaigns.
Transport Minister Michael Godinho, addressing the media in Panaji, praised the downward trend but warned that complacency could reverse the gains. He called for a comprehensive review of road‑design standards, stricter enforcement of speed limits, and expanded use of speed‑calming devices on high‑risk stretches.
Godinho also announced plans to collaborate with local police, the National Highway Authority and civil society groups to launch a statewide road‑safety audit. The audit will identify accident‑prone zones and recommend engineering and educational interventions aimed at protecting motorists, pedestrians and two‑wheelers.
Officials said the decline in deaths is encouraging but emphasized that continued investment in infrastructure, better driver training and robust penalties for violations remain essential to sustain the trend.
The minister concluded by urging citizens to adopt safe driving habits and to report hazardous road conditions promptly, underscoring that road safety is a shared responsibility between the government and the public.
