Goa’s newly opened elevated corridor shut for traffic after two fatal mishaps

Two people died in separate incidents on Goa’s elevated corridor within days of its inauguration, prompting authorities to limit its use.
The state government inaugurated an elevated corridor in Goa earlier this week, aiming to ease congestion on the coastal highway and provide a faster link between key tourist hubs. The modern flyover, spanning several kilometres, was opened to the public with much fanfare and expectations of smoother traffic flow.
Within 48 hours of opening, two separate mishaps were reported on the corridor. In the first incident, a motorbike rider lost control and fell from the elevated lane, sustaining fatal injuries. The second tragedy involved a pedestrian who attempted to cross the structure illegally and was struck by a vehicle, resulting in death.
Following the incidents, the Goa Public Works Department issued an immediate advisory restricting vehicular movement on the corridor to authorized public transport and emergency services only. Police and safety officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact causes and to assess whether design or operational lapses contributed to the accidents.
Authorities have also announced that safety signage, barriers, and surveillance will be enhanced before the corridor is reopened for general traffic. Commuters have been advised to use alternative routes until the safety audit is completed.
