The Goa Water Resources Department has begun tapping the Kushavati River to augment water availability for Selaulim, aiming to improve local water security.

The Water Resources Department (WRD) of Goa announced the initiation of a tapping project on the Kushavati River. The move is intended to channel additional water into the Selaulim reservoir, which has faced seasonal shortfalls in recent years.
Officials said the project involves constructing a small diversion structure and associated conveyance works that will direct flow from the river during the monsoon and post‑monsoon periods. By linking the river to the Selaulim water system, the department hopes to stabilize supply for domestic and agricultural use in the surrounding villages.
The WRD has earmarked funds for the construction and expects the infrastructure to become operational before the end of the current water year. Local authorities anticipate that the enhanced water availability will reduce dependence on groundwater and mitigate water‑stress during dry months.
Community representatives welcomed the initiative, noting that reliable water supply is critical for farming and daily life in the region. The department will monitor river flow and reservoir levels to manage the new intake sustainably.
The project underscores Goa's broader strategy to diversify water sources and improve resilience against climate‑induced variability.
