Three Indian states—Goa, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand—have begun testing a new deposit return system aimed at reducing packaging waste and boosting recycling.

Goa, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand have launched a pilot program to test a deposit return system (DRS) for packaging waste.
The scheme requires a refundable deposit on beverage and other packaging items, which consumers can reclaim when they return the containers to designated collection points.
By encouraging returns, the states aim to cut the volume of discarded packaging and increase the rate of recycling.
The pilot is expected to run for 12 months, after which the states will review the data and decide whether to expand the system.
The initiative aligns with national waste management goals and could serve as a model for other regions.
