A rights panel has called for authorities to clamp down on illegal tourist rentals operating within a housing complex in Calangute, Goa.
The panel, comprising members concerned with citizen rights, has formally requested law‑enforcement agencies to intervene against unlicensed tourist rentals in a residential complex at Calangute, a popular beach town in Goa.
According to the panel, several owners are leasing out apartments and villas to short‑term visitors without obtaining the necessary permits, breaching the state’s housing regulations and creating disturbances for permanent residents.
The panel has urged the Goa municipal authorities and police to conduct spot inspections, verify the legality of each rental unit, and take punitive action against those found violating the rules.
It warned that continued non‑compliance could trigger stricter penalties, including fines and possible revocation of property titles, to protect the interests of local communities and maintain order in the tourism sector.
