In Kenar village of Gaya, a once-thriving brass and copper pottery industry—run by about 80 households—faces a sharp decline as machine-made alternatives, rising inflation and lack of capital erode its market.

Kenar village, situated in the Gaya district of Bihar, was historically known for its brass and copper pottery, a craft practiced by around 80 families.

The village’s artisans produced a range of utensils that were once in demand in larger cities across the state and beyond.

However, the arrival of machine‑made cookware, coupled with rising inflation and a shortage of capital, has pushed the traditional business into a deep crisis.

Many of the craftsmen now find it difficult to compete on price and are struggling to sustain their livelihoods.

The community’s ancestral trade, once a source of pride, is now facing an uncertain future as modern pressures mount.
