Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi alleged that the Modi‑Shah administration is attempting to undermine the constitutional right to dissent.

Gaurav Gogoi, a Member of Parliament from Assam, publicly charged the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Deputy Prime Minister (referred to as Shah) of attempting to erode the fundamental right to dissent. He said the administration's recent policy moves indicate an intent to "steal" citizens' ability to voice opposition.

The MP highlighted that several legislative proposals and regulatory actions appear designed to limit public protests and curb critical commentary, thereby threatening democratic freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.

Opposition leaders welcomed Gogoi's remarks, calling them a necessary reminder of the need to safeguard dissent. A government spokesperson, however, declined to comment on the specific accusations, emphasizing that any measures taken are aimed at maintaining public order.

The debate over dissent has resurfaced repeatedly in Indian politics, with civil society groups and legal experts warning that curbing dissent could set a dangerous precedent for democratic governance.
