Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said consultants responsible for flawed infrastructure planning are the main cause of road accidents and fatalities on Indian highways.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari warned that a series of recent highway crashes can be traced to poor project planning by consulting firms. He highlighted that many accidents stem from design flaws, inadequate site assessments and sub‑standard execution that compromise road safety.
Gadkari singled out consultants who prepare detailed project reports and alignment studies, saying their negligence creates hazardous conditions for motorists. He cited examples where misaligned curves, insufficient drainage and weak pavement structures have directly contributed to loss of life.
The minister called for immediate corrective action, urging state agencies and the National Highways Authority to audit ongoing projects and hold errant consultants accountable. He announced that the ministry will tighten approval processes and introduce stricter quality checks.
In a broader safety drive, Gadkari said the government will review all pending highway proposals to ensure they meet rigorous technical standards. He emphasized that protecting commuters must be the top priority and that responsible parties will face penalties.
The statement comes as India grapples with a surge in road fatalities, prompting calls for systemic reforms across the infrastructure sector.
